What is the Difference between the Monitor and Source Head?

The Monitor Head is used  to monitor data, the Source Head is used to transmit (source) data.  They look the same on the outside, but are marked "Source Head" or "Monitor Head".  On newer cable sets, the Source head is black and the Monitor Head is beige.
